Young Scientist Award 2009

There were 24 candidates, the winner is Reginald Annan, originally from Ghana but completed his PhD at the University of Southampton, UK.

During the 19th International Congress on Nutrition, the ENLP, SEANLP and ANLP will, for the first time, present a joint Young Scientist Award, to recognise the potential of young scientists to become global leaders in nutrition. The aim of this joint initiative is to encourage outstanding young researchers from all over the world and from all fields of nutrition to develop their careers in nutrition and to establish a global network of future nutrition leaders.

Award > The winner will receive a cash prize of 1000 US dollars, donated by the Judith Zwartz Foundation, Wageningen, The Netherlands.

Applicants > Candidates should be final year PhD students or postdoctoral fellows in human nutrition from any country, less than 40 years.

How to apply > Applicants should email (info[at]enlp.eu.com) a copy of their abstract accepted to be presented at the International Congress on Nutrition (Bangkok, 4-9 October 2009) along with a short answer to the following question: Why is leadership important for the future of nutrition research? Describe the role you will play as a leader in nutrition research. A short paragraph (max 150 words) should be provided, in English, before 15 August 2009.

Evaluation of applications > The evaluation of applications will be made by a global committee of senior nutrition leaders. The decision will be based on the insight applicants show into their role as potential leaders as well as the quality, novelty and interest of the abstract presented at the 19th International Congress on Nutrition. The final decision will be announced during the NLP training day, a pre-congress meeting (4/10/2009) about leadership (see http://www.enlp.eu.com/ for details). The award winner will be requested to write a one pager about his/her role as a leader in nutrition research and his/her impressions of the 19th International Congress on Nutrition. The paper will be published in the ENLPress. The award winner will be asked to put the award-logo on the poster or in the presentation.

The European Nutrition Leadership Programme (ENLP) promotes nutritional well-being through a multi-disciplinary and multicultural network of nutritionists that is internationally recognised for its quality in science and communication. It aims to assist the development of future leaders in the field of human nutrition in Europe. During a one-week course, held annually since 1994, emphasis is placed on understanding and implementing the qualities and skills of leadership, team building, communication and the role of nutrition and science in society. Participants are selected each year from promising scientists interested in nutrition and health across Europe.

The South East Asian Nutrition Leadership Programme (SEANLP), held annually since (2002) and inspired by the ENLP, aims to empower Asian nutritionists at postgraduate level by improving their competencies in effective leadership including team building and communication skills. The one-week annual seminar attracts some 25 multi-disciplinary nutritionists each year, and provides an excellent networking forum for nutritionists in the region.

The African Nutrition Leadership Programme (ANLP) is a 10-day leadership development and networking seminar held annually since 2002. The programme focus is on developing leadership capabilities in younger health professionals and scientists in the field of human health and nutrition in Africa with the aim of meeting the demands for leadership in Africa to solve its nutritional challenges. The programme, broadly based on the model of the ENLP and with a distinct African character, is attended by around 30 selected participants every year.
